Paws and Stripes is a nonprofit organization providing animal assisted therapy to military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, and traumatic brain injury. It is our vision for every military veteran and their dog to live without isolation.
We have an immediate opening for a Team Trainer to join in this rewarding work. Team Trainers utilize dog training skills and case management to assist enrolled veterans in training dogs to be their own service dog or canine companion. Our dogs are often rescues from area shelters and selected by the veteran for this purpose. Team Trainers conduct training for Teams in one-on-one and group settings and maintain necessary records. Trainers conduct weekly training sessions, lead group classes, screen potential dogs for the program, attend staff meetings along with other responsibilities. Trainers also track Team’s progress, serve as points of contact for enrolled veterans, complete progress reports, and fulfill other Programs Department duties as needed. Team Trainers participate in training classes on and off site to develop training skills in alignment with Paws and Stripes client care principles and dog training techniques. We use non-aversive, force-free, reward-based training techniques.
