Human Resources Generalist

Hours: M-TH 9am-5pm (32 hours – full time)

Pay: $52,000 Exempt – no overtime


Runs daily functions of the Human Resource department including policy and procedure development, implementation, and dedication to building and growing a strong and stable workforce. Responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all the human resource management activities to include recruiting, onboarding, performance management, compensation, benefits, employee relations, personnel policies, workplace safety and compliance, training and development, rewards and recognition, and overall HR planning and strategy. Works collaboratively with the Executive Director and DOO to develop and implement HR planning and strategy, employee communications, projects, and programs that support and/or enhance the employee experience and objectives at Paws and Stripes. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Human Resources professional that enjoys using their skill and knowledge to create, build, and execute HR and employee initiatives.



  1. Adheres to and advises managers and team members regarding policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations to ensure compliance, safety, and organizational efficiencies.

    1. Measures of Success:

      1. Collaborate with leadership and managers to address, develop, coordinate, and execute employee training and development initiatives

      2. Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments.

      3. Collaborate with leadership and managers to identify and coordinate employee rewards and recognition initiatives

      4. Works closely with the Executive Director and DOO to execute human resource programs in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.

      5. Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.

  2. Lead recruiting and staffing efforts to include updating job postings, conducting interviews and the selection process, background checks, and making offers of employment.

    1. Measures of Success:

      1. Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff

      2. Administer and manage benefit plans, annual renewals, and broker relationship

      3. Learns and implements new hire orientation and on-boarding and employee recognition programs.

      4. Reinforce and champion culture built on diversity and inclusion

      5. Acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications

      6. Partner with leadership and managers to define talent needs, workforce planning, and equal opportunity initiatives

  3. Identify, recommend, and implement innovative solutions for continuous improvements.

    1. Measures of Success:

      1. Ability to identify problems, evaluate facts, and formulate sound solutions to solve practical problems and handle a variety of variables where limited guidelines may exist.

      2. Review, process, and provide follow-up related to payroll, time reporting, extended leave, corrective actions, etc.

      3. Attends and participates in relevant employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations

      4. Serve as a link between leaders and employees by interpreting, managing, and helping to resolve work-related and employee relations issues.

  4. Utilize HR information to process actions, compile and analyze data.

    1. Measures of Success:

      1. Maintain all Human Resources data/files to include Personnel, Benefits, and Employment records (paperless).

      2. Manage and maintain the performance management system, process, templates, etc.

      3. Train and/or provide guidance to ensure thoughtful employee assessments, development, and goal setting

  5. Other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in Human Resources theories, concepts, principles, and practices as well as knowledge of federal and state labor laws and compliance obligations

  • Experience mentoring, influencing, facilitating, presenting, developing processes, and analyzing/problem-solving

  • Outstanding communication skills, including verbal, written, and listening

  • Personal qualities that include a high level of integrity, ethical conduct, professionalism, and confidentiality

  • Strong critical thinking and conflict management skills, balance priorities and keep organized, pay attention to detail

  • Ability to build trust and create strong relationships with a diverse group of individuals

  • Ability to lead, take charge, and offer professional opinions and direction

  • Independent self-starter with positive problem-solver attitude

  • Ability and knowledge of how to address employee disputes, conduct investigations, and reconcile differences

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn databases and software systems – Gusto, QuickBooks, and 15/5 Performance Management

  • Strong collaborative skills with internal staff and external resources


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 1-3 years previous Human Resources experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or another closely related field.

  • SHRM-SCP/CP or HRCI SPHR/PHR Certification a plus


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Must like dogs and people - daily exposure to dogs and people in the office environment should be expected

  • Work is performed in a highly active environment with exposure to a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a diverse employee and client population

  • Work is performed at a desk/computer screen for extended periods of time in a traditional office environment.

  • This position requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate phones, computers, and other office equipment

  • Position may require the occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds

The roll of Team Trainer is to provide client care for veteran clients and graduated teams through one-on-one sessions, group classes, continuing education, etc.; on-site kennel management; case management; etc. Team Trainers must possess exceptional organizational and time management skills and have the ability to work independently and as a team member.


Preferred, 2 years' experience in dog training. Paws and Stripes’ training philosophy is focused on positive reinforcement training. Team Trainers are expected to train using humane methods. The Team Trainer must be able to successfully
handle conflict, difficult situations, and maintain transparent communication with their team. This position must demonstrate high quality communication skills. Reports to the Senior Trainer.

Team Trainer Job Duties:

  • Attend Staff meetings, Programs meetings, and monthly Program Education Trainings

  • Abide by all policies and procedures set forth in the Employee Handbook and any additional organizational policies and procedures; Keep up to date on all changes and additions

  • Maintain working knowledge of all Program department and Client procedures; stay informed of any and all updates and changes to curriculum, policies and procedures

  • Maintain and monitor Programs equipment and supplies and records

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all ADA, Fair Housing Act, DOT and other access law information for service animals

  • Assist with preparation for Program Department activities such as Workshops, Group Classes,

  • Individual one-on-one sessions, Continuing Education Conferences, Annual Reassessments and Socialization Classes

  • Assist and lead Program Department activities

  • Attend and conduct mobile activities for multiple hours per day

  • Maintain quality communication with staff and clients

  • Maintain case management information on current, future, and graduated clients

  • Coordinate veterinary screenings, appointments, and clinic relationships

  • Coordinate shelter partnerships, scheduling, and so on

  • Create and maintain Programs Department documents as assigned

  • Seek innovations appropriate to the position in an effort to streamline processes in support of the overall mission and vision of Paws and Stripes

  • Handle fussy and reactive dogs as needed

  • Monitor health and well-being of client dogs

  • Maintain knowledge in and assist in maintaining current Program Department standards and information

  • Assist and lead dog pre-screening, selections, home visits, multi-level canine behavioral issue resolutions

  • Other duties as assigned


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed at a desk/computer screen for extended periods of time in a traditional office environment

  • Work requires use of a computer and computer software to enter data

  • To perform these essential job duties, it will require the manual dexterity sufficient to operate phones, computers and other office equipment

  • Must have the ability to write and speak clearly using the English language to convey information and be able to hear at normal speaking levels both in person and over the telephone

  • Must be able to work without the assistance of a Service Dog for short periods of time when working with other dogs (crates are available)

  • Work is performed in a highly active environment with exposure to a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and diverse employee and client population.

  • Daily exposure to dogs in the office environment should be expected.

  • Position may require the occasional lifting of up to 40+ pounds.

  • Hours: Mon-Thurs, 8:00am – 6:00pm (subject to change with some duties)
