Embracing a New Chapter at Paws and Stripes: A Message from Our Executive Director

Embracing a New Chapter at Paws and Stripes: A Message from Our Executive Director

As I approach the two-month mark in my role as the Executive Director of Paws and Stripes, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey thus far. This period has been one of deep learning, meaningful connections, and laying the groundwork for the exciting future that lies ahead.

Paws and Stripes is more than just an organization—it’s a community where Veterans and their families find the support and resources they need to heal and thrive. My vision, as I step into this leadership role, is to build on the strong foundation laid by those before me while guiding our organization toward new heights of excellence in mental health services and Veteran support.

Understanding the Need: Veterans in New Mexico

New Mexico is home to over 135,000 Veterans, each with a unique story of service and sacrifice. However, many of these brave individuals face significant challenges as they transition back into civilian life. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 20% of Veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in any given year. Moreover, the suicide rate among Veterans in New Mexico is alarmingly high, with a rate of 43.2 per 100,000—significantly higher than the national average.

These statistics underscore the critical need for accessible, effective mental health services for our Veterans. At Paws and Stripes, we are committed to addressing this need head-on by providing comprehensive support that includes mental health counseling, service dog training, and peer mentorship.

Our Clients: The Faces of Paws and Stripes

The Veterans who come to Paws and Stripes are dealing with a wide range of challenges. Beyond physical disabilities, our program applicants experience PTSD (89%), chronic pain (50%), depression (72%), military sexual trauma (26%), suicidal ideation (66%), and traumatic brain injury (23%). These numbers reflect the complex and multifaceted struggles our Veterans face daily, and they highlight the importance of a holistic approach to care.

Service dogs play a crucial role in the lives of these Veterans. These animals provide not just physical assistance, but emotional support that can be life-changing. For those struggling with PTSD, depression, or suicidal thoughts, a service dog can offer a sense of security and companionship that is invaluable in their journey toward healing.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, I am filled with optimism about the future of Paws and Stripes. We are not just an organization—we are a movement dedicated to transforming the lives of Veterans and their families. Leading this mission is a profound honor, and I am privileged to work alongside such a passionate and dedicated team.

Our work is built on three key pillars: mental health support, service dog training, and building a strong community for Veterans and their dogs. The faces of Paws and Stripes include not only the Veterans we serve but also the incredible dogs that play a crucial role in their healing journey.

A key part of this effort is the mentor program for Veterans, set to launch on October 5. This initiative reflects our belief in the power of shared experiences and mutual support. By pairing Veterans with mentors who have successfully navigated similar challenges, we aim to build a strong, supportive network that empowers each individual to achieve both personal and professional goals.

Moreover, we are proud of our partnerships with organizations like Animal Humane and VCA, which provide essential veterinary care to the service dogs. It's also important to note that 90% of our dogs are adopted from local shelters, reinforcing our commitment to rescuing animals while simultaneously supporting Veterans. Together, these partnerships help us build a compassionate community where both Veterans and their service dogs can thrive.

Together, we can and will continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who have served our country.
